LSU Science Café: The Doctor Is In (Your Phone)—Treating Mental Illness

Recent technological innovations promise to reshape how we understand and treat serious mental illness. In this talk, Alex Cohen, professor of psychology and director of the Affective Science & Psychopathology Laboratory at LSU, will discuss how they can be deployed and regulated to unlock their full potential. In the near future, these technologies can be used to greatly improve the accuracy and efficiency of mental healthcare, and to empower consumers and their support teams.

Alex Cohen is a licensed clinical psychologist working on understanding and improving the lives of individuals with serious mental illnesses. His focus is on adapting biobehavioral technologies, notably automated computerized analysis of natural behavior, to assess a wide range of clinical issues, including suicidality, depression, psychosis, mania, and anxiety. Cohen received the LSU Rainmaker award in 2016.

LSU Science Café is sponsored by the LSU Office of Research & Economic Development and held on the last Tuesday of each month. Doors open at 5 p.m. for networking and light refreshments, and the talk will start at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
