      LSU Science Café: Teaching Lucas—Training Transgender Voices

      Teaching Lucas: Training Transgender Voices Loraine Sims is the LSU School of Music’s Edith Killgore Kirkpatrick Professor of Voice Join Loraine Sims as she shares the story of one of her LSU vocal music students named Lucas, whom she trained through his gender identity transition. Weaving together the deeply personal process of transition and music, Sims will provide insights that led to greater understanding and humanity towards transgender voices. LSU School of Music Professor and Vocal Studies Division Chair Loraine Sims has trained hundreds of students in voice. As an active and critically acclaimed vocal recitalist, her repertoire includes a broad range of songs and arias from the Baroque through contemporary periods as well as a variety of selections from the American musical theater tradition. She has also presented on her work teaching transgender students at professional conferences in Stockholm, Sweden and Santa Barbara, California.
